Dynamic Packet Processors A new abstraction for router extensibility

چکیده
The history of the Internet is that of rapid change and adaptability. The simple IP service model and the informal standardization process have fostered rapid evolution of systems and services. However, as the Internet has transformed from an academic playground to an essential commercial infrastructure the service model and the standardization process have become more complex. While outsourcing and optimizations are driving services into the network, the IETF is increasingly the battleground of vendors. Consequently, introducing new services to the Internet has become increasingly complicated. Active and programmable networking is an effort to reclaim the flexibility of the early Internet and reduce the need for

Towards High-Performance Active Networking
Network processors have been developed to ease the implementation of new network protocols in high-speed routers. Being embedded in network interface cards, they enable extended packet processing at link speed as is required, for instance, for active network nodes. Active network nodes start using network processors for extended packet processing close to the link. The control and configuration...
متن کاملTowards Low Latency Software Routers
Network devices based on commodity hardware are capable of high-speed packet processing while maintaining the programmability and extensibility of software. Thus, software-based network devices, like software routers, software-based firewalls, or monitoring systems, constitute a cost-efficient and flexible alternative to expensive, special purpose hardware. The overall packet processing perform...
متن کاملA High Performance Parallel IP Lookup Technique Using Distributed Memory Organization and ISCB-Tree Data Structure
The IP Lookup Process is a key bottleneck in routing due to the increase in routing table size, increasing traıc and migration to IPv6 addresses. The IP address lookup involves computation of the Longest Prefix Matching (LPM), which existing solutions such as BSD Radix Tries, scale poorly when traıc in the router increases or when employed for IPv6 address lookups. In this paper, we describe a ...

متن کاملParallel Packet Processing on Multi-core and Many- core Processors
The Service-oriented Router (SoR), a highly functional router based on a novel router architecture, enables unprecedented web services traditional routers were unable to provide. The SoR performs Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to analyze Layer 7 information, which is becoming increasingly difficult due to the substantial increase in Internet traffic. Meanwhile, multi-core processors and general-p...
